What Mandarin is built from
An old river settlement along the east bank fifteen miles south of downtown, absorbed into the city in 1968 and built out heavily from the 1970s onward. Large wooded lots under live oaks, ranch and two-storey houses on slab, riverfront and creek-front property with docks and boathouses, and a great many screened porches and glassed-in Florida rooms added on the back.
Established family households, long ownership, and a way of living that puts as much of the year outdoors as the weather allows. The porch is a real room here rather than a decoration.
The Mandarin problem
The specific problem in Mandarin is the rug that has been moved outdoors. A screened porch, a covered dock or a Florida room is treated as interior space, so a wool rug that used to be in the dining room gets retired to one when something newer arrives inside, and from that moment it is living in outdoor conditions with none of the protection an outdoor rug has. Three things go after it. Ultraviolet light comes in off the water and through screen at a level no interior room ever sees, and it does not fade a rug evenly — it takes the reds and the yellows first, so a madder red field goes salmon and then tan while the indigo next to it holds, which is why these rugs come back looking like the wrong colours rather than like faded ones. Dew is the second. A screened porch reaches the dew point most clear nights from autumn into spring, and the rug goes damp at three in the morning and dries again by ten, every single night, which is a wetting cycle no amount of daytime sunshine undoes. The third is that a porch is outside as far as insects are concerned, and wool on an outdoor floor is a food source with no one walking on it. Fading is permanent and cannot be honestly undone; the damp and what lives in it can be dealt with, and the sensible advice is to stop treating the porch as a room for a rug that matters.
