Rug Cleaning in Julington Creek

The water here is tea-coloured, and that colour is the thing that ends up in rugs. Blackwater creeks run dark because they carry dissolved tannin leached out of cypress, oak and decaying leaf litter, and tannin is a dye — a weak, brown, extremely stable one that was used on cloth for centuries precisely because it does not wash out easily. It gets into a rug in three ways: off the creek on wet paws and boat shoes, off the ground under the oaks where the same tannin is in every fallen leaf, and out of the rug's own cotton foundation. That last one catches people out. Cotton contains natural tannins of its own, and when a wool rug is wetted and then allowed to dry slowly from the back — a leak, a rinse that was not finished properly, an over-wet spot clean — those tannins dissolve and travel with the water as it wicks up to the surface, where the water evaporates and the tannin does not. What is left is cellulosic browning: a yellow-brown blush on the tips of the pile, usually strongest around the edge of wherever was wet, that looks exactly like dirt and does not respond to cleaning because it is not dirt. It is reversible, but it is reversed with the right chemistry rather than with more washing, and the real cure is drying a rug fast and flat so it never happens in the first place.
