Layering is the local hazard, and it is entirely a decorating fashion. The look here is a wool or silk rug laid on top of wall-to-wall natural-fibre matting — sisal, seagrass, coir or a jute-backed broadloom — rather than directly on a hard floor, and it photographs beautifully and works very badly. Matting is an open, coarse weave, so everything walked in falls straight through the top rug and lodges in the layer underneath, where no vacuum will ever reach it and where it sits as a permanent abrasive under the rug that matters. Worse, that bottom layer is cellulose. Jute, sisal and coir take up moisture readily, hold far more of it than wool does, release it slowly, and brown badly and permanently when they get properly wet, which they do from the underside of a rug that came back from anywhere slightly damp. So the top rug can no longer dry downward at all, and the thing it is lying on is both a sponge and a source of the tannin that stains it. Lift the pair after a few years and the difference is obvious: the matting is grey and gritty and often browned in patches, and the back of the good rug has taken the pattern of it. The wool rug can be washed. The matting underneath is nearly always the reason it needed washing.
