Rugs here are handled by movers more often than by owners, and moving is where they get damaged. A permanent-change-of-station move puts a rug through a sequence nothing else in a house goes through: rolled by a packing crew working to a clock, wrapped tight in polyethylene stretch film, stood on end in a truck, and then held for weeks or months in a container or a warehouse before it is delivered somewhere else. Every part of that hurts wool. Stretch film is a vapour barrier, so a rug that was even slightly damp when it was wrapped — and in this town most of them are — cannot dry, and the moisture in it simply redistributes and goes to work; a wrap that stays on through a Florida summer produces a rug with mould growing in bands where the film was tightest. Rolling face-in and against the pile sets a crease that becomes a permanent crack in the foundation, because the warps on the outside of a tight roll are held stretched for months. Standing a rolled rug on end puts the whole weight of it on the bottom few inches. And a rug wrapped in plastic is invisible: nothing is inspected on arrival, so damage that started in transit is not found until the wrap comes off in the next house. The practical advice is unglamorous — have a rug clean and genuinely dry before it is packed, ask for it rolled face-out around a tube rather than folded, and get the plastic off the day it arrives.
