The commonest damage we see in this neighborhood was done by the vacuum cleaner, by someone conscientious. An upright with a rotating beater bar is engineered for tufted wall-to-wall carpet, where the bar's job is to slap a bonded pile loose. A hand-knotted rug is not bonded; the pile is tied to the foundation and the surface fibres are held by twist alone, so the same bar beats the yarn open, breaks fibres, and produces a fuzzy, blurred surface that is misread as wear and generates a lot of unnecessary worry about shedding. Fringes come off worse. Fringe is not decoration — it is the warp of the rug, the structural threads that everything else is tied onto, sticking out at the ends. Running a beater bar over it or pushing a vacuum head off the end of the rug catches those warps, snaps them, and the loss walks inward from the end one knot row at a time. Once enough of them are gone the end of the rug starts to unravel and it needs a proper structural repair rather than a cosmetic new fringe stitched on. The fix costs nothing: suction only, no beater bar, along the pile rather than across it, stop short of the fringe and do the fringe by hand, and turn the rug over and vacuum the back occasionally, which does far more good than any amount of work on the face.
