Rug Cleaning in Jacksonville Beach

This is the Atlantic, not a sheltered bay, and the rain here does not always fall downward. A nor'easter drives rain almost horizontally onto an east-facing wall for a day or two at a time, several times between October and March, and a sliding door or an older window that is perfectly weathertight against vertical rain will take water at the sill under that kind of pressure. It arrives as a thin, unspectacular wetting along the bottom of the opening and it goes straight into whatever is lying there, which is usually the end of a rug. Three things make it worse than an ordinary spill. It is salt water, because rain driven off the surf carries sea salt inland, so the wetted band keeps drawing moisture back out of the air long after it has dried and never really dries again. It happens repeatedly at the same spot over a season, so the rug never gets a chance to recover between events. And it is invisible from above — the pile feels barely damp, the cotton foundation underneath is saturated, and by February the tell is a discoloured line a foot in from the end and a smell near the door. The pattern is diagnostic: damage in a band parallel to the glass, worst at the sill and fading inward. Getting the salt out is the whole job, and it takes flushing rather than drying.
